SUSAN ASHWORTH
Born 1968, Susan Ashworth graduated with a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art from Falmouth School of Art and Design in 1991.
Susan started painting at the age of 13, encouraged by her school teacher and artist, Richard Pikesley, she used oil paints in class and continues to work with oil as she loves it unique qualities, its history, vigour and tricks.
Born on the Isle of Portland, she now lives in the Sussex harbour town of Newhaven. Susan has always made her home in “well-used” coastal places of industry. The edges of things; changing light; the space of the coast and sea have all had an effect on her work.
Inspired by painters on both sides of the Atlantic, but especially the Bay Area Figurative Movement, Susan uses sketch, collage, digital photography and Adobe Photoshop to explore compositions based on plants and other found objects sourced from her home, garden and surroundings, which she then paints in oils on board.
The mainly abstract style of her student years, and later as a member of the Brighton Phoenix Co-operative, took a more representational turn twelve years ago, leading to the current and continuing focus on still life.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the UK and in Europe and the USA.
