MICHAEL ALFORD

Born in 1958, Michael trained at Chelsea School of Art and Slade School of Art prior to which he was at Durham University.
His studying at the Slade provided a thorough understanding and grounding in the classical approach to drawing and painting.  This has given him the freedom to paint in a confident manner, in which he expresses in fluid deft brushstrokes the sense of the scene.  Painting in this way means that his pictures do not have the appearance of being over-worked.  His oeuvre ranges from cityscapes to the smoky interior of a jazz club.  Depicting the human figure is a crucial part of Michael’s painting process, in which a sense of drama is as much a part of the composition as the figure itself.
In 2013 Michael served as the official war artist with 1 Mechanized Brigade during their final deployment in Afghanistan. He is also a renowned muralist whose large original works appear in public venues and private residences.
He regularly has solo exhibitions and has been invited to exhibit in group shows in the UK, America and Europe.  His work is held by the National Army Museum.
