Isla Hackney, born 1962, studied Art and Art History at the Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh University, graduating with MA Honours in Fine Art in 1985. From 1986 to 1992 she was a lecturer in colleges in Scotland, London and the southeast before joining the Kent Institute, where she studied Time-Based Media and lectured in Visual Theory. Isla has also worked as a freelance exhibitions assistant and researcher and has written and published several books.

There is a feeling of movement and rhythm in Isla's work that is dictated by the nature of the paint, its propensity to spread, stain and settle in pools, to drip and splatter when poured and to run in unpredictable ways. The process of painting intervenes and the significance of these sources fades as the work takes on its own momentum. Isla has displayed her work in exhibitions across the country and was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1993.
