Born in 1966, Marcus lived in Spain to undertake a rigorous, five year training in classical oil painting at one of the few remaining establishments in Europe that taught the traditional techniques of painting. He studied at the Escuela Libre Del Mediterraneo in Palma.Returning to England Marcus initially concentrated on portrait painting. It is as a portrait painter that he is most well known and has received numerous prestigious commissions. He has though also always been a painter of landscapes and equestrian subjects. Travelling to India, firstly in 2001, he was introduced to the massive camel fairs where he brought together the landscape, animals and human figure capturing the chaos of colour and heat. Marcus will frequently work ‘en plein air' on small panels painting with rapid brush strokes and thick impasto. These pictures form the basis for large studio paintings. The studio landscapes are often huge, 6' x 5', approached though with a similar method to the small panels where the essence and character of the place is powerfully depicted.  In the last few years his numerous commissions have included a large pair of paintings for the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. The President of the Union Club in New York; The Scots Guards at Balmoral; The Jockey Club in Newmarket. Marcus Hodge continues to work as a portrait painter.  Please contact the Gallery should you be interested in commissioning a portrait in oil or charcoal.  Examples of these portraits are shown below.
